Washburne Memorial State Park
Washburne is located on the east side
of Highway 101 with a buffer of native plants between you and
the highway. The campsites are spacious. There are several
trails of varying difficulty leading from the campsites to the
beach, wildlife viewing areas, and second-growth forests.
Darlingtonia State Natural Site
US 101 5 miles north of Florence, OR (800) 551-6949.
Darlingtonia State Natural Site is the
only Oregon state park property dedicated to the protection of
a single plant species. Concurrently, the plants it protects
are the only carnivorous flora in the system. This 18-acre
botanical park provides parking and a boardwalk trail out into
a fen that is home to Darlingtonia californica. Also
called a cobra lily, the rare, strangely-shaped plant is the
only member of the pitcher plant family (Sarraceniaceae) in
Oregon.
Heceta Head Lighthouse
"Heceta Head Lighthouse is located on a
breathtaking bluff 150 feet above the sea. It is one of the
most visited lighthouses in the United States drawing
thousands of visitors each year to sense its history, romantic
aura, and spectacular view. Construction of the lighthouse
began in 1892. Lumber came from local mills, the masonry and
cement came from San Francisco, and rock used in the base of
the tower was quarried from the Clackamas River near Oregon
City. Laborers were paid $2 a day and worked an average of ten
hours a day. The highest paid carpenter received $4 a day. The
tower is 56 feet tall with a focal plane of 205 feet above sea
level. The most powerful light along the Oregon coast, the
light can be seen 21 miles out to sea and is only stopped by
the curvature of the earth."
