Simpson and his son Louis were prime movers in the town's development. North Bend Oregon was the hub of their northwestern timber holdings. The Simpsons built large sawmills and shipyards, and were instrumental in the development and promotion of the town. Verne Gorst, a member of aviation's Hall of Fame, whose land, water and air service was the precursor of United Airlines, was a prominent figure in the city's continuing expansion.
